A poetic memory for IHC delegates from your master of ceremonies – Ashley Walmsley

Before

There was a time we ponder on,
When growing plants meant more,
When dollars didn’t matter,
There was a time “before”.

Before flowers were business,
Delivered for a sum,
Bedraggled roadside daisies,
Still meant the world to mum.

Before the Chelsea Flower Show,
And experts started breedin’,
Before we aimed for ‘perfect’,
There was a garden of Eden.

Before greening regulations,
When common sense prevailed,
And “veging out” meant garden food,
And dirt under your nails.

Before the plastic playgrounds,
Which safety standards meet,
Trees were planted to be climbed,
By little hands and feet.

Before they were the sportstars,
With trophies on the shelf,
They played within the backyards,
On grass that grew itself.

Before the test tube flavours,
Lashed with a chocolate stripe,
There were just simply cherries,
Before a Cherry Ripe.

Before they called them superfoods,
In healthy café scenes,
We gladly ate what’s on our plate,
And made to eat our greens.

Before the Colonel fried a bird,
Creating chicken tizz,
Remember herbs and spices,
Make Kentucky what it is.

Before drive-thru accounted for,
The Sunday roast’s demise,
We used to eat potatoes,
Before they were called “fries”.

Before tech giant Apple,
Bestowed on us these fads,
i-This, i-That but once there were,
Just apples and lily pads.

Before the screens upon our phones,
Held us in a trance,
Before Plants versus Zombies,
We simply just had plants.

Before the pills aplenty,
That fill our medicine drawer,
We ate the crust, spat the seeds,
The pumpkin skin and all.

Before the world gets greyer,
Before it gets too mean,
Perhaps we just all need to,
Think a little more green.
